The Baby NETwork is a grassroots organization inspired by an article in Time Magazine, “The $10.00 Solution” by Jeffrey Sachs, Jan. 15, 2007. The article told of the impact of malaria on the children of Africa, how a baby dies every few seconds and how a $10.00 bed net could make a difference by protecting those at risk from the malaria mosquito.

PARISH NURSE NEWS

Thanks to Peter Nielsen and John Hall, your Parish Nurses now have a working computer and printer. We are also now on the World Wide Web. Having access to the Internet is like having a library at your finger tips. But how does one know that the information they are reading is accurate? Here are some tips to help you find repeatable websites.

Websites ending in the following are usually non-profit sites and good for finding information of all kinds:
.gov - Government websites paid for and maintained by tax dollars. These sites give accurate, up to date information.

.org - Websites maintained by a professional organization. (The Episcopal Church websites are .org .) Websites for licensed professions such doctors and informational sites maintained by a foundation also end in .org. These sites also give accurate and up to date information.

.edu – Websites that are maintained by an educational organization such as a university or teaching hospital. These sites give accurate and up to date information.

Websites ending in the following are usually maintained by for-profit companies. If they are selling a specific product you may be able to get accurate information about the product or the information you find may just be a marketing strategy to sell their product. Stay away from websites ending in .com and .net.

Chat Rooms are not the place to get accurate information about anything. They are a place for people to express their beliefs, experiences and opinions. They are also a place many predators go to find victims. Stay away from chat rooms if you are looking for information of any kind.

If you are looking for health information here are some good websites:
http://cdc.gov– Centers for Disease Control
http://www.nih.gov– National Institute of Health
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus - Medline at the National
Institute of Health
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov– Food and Drug Administration
http://www.kumc.edu– University of Kansas Medical Center
http://www.saintlukeshealthsystem.org - St. Luke’s Hospitals
http://www.childrensmercy.org– Children’s Mercy Hospital
http://www.mayoclinic.org - Mayo Clinic
http://webapps.ama-assn.org– American Medical Association
http://www.rarediseases.org National Organization of Rare Diseases
http://en.wikipedia.org - Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia you can search.
http://www.webmd.com– Web MD (paid for by pharmaceutical companies but edited and run by doctors.)

If you would like to research a certain health issue or just get information about it, let one of the Parish Nurse members know. We would be glad to help you. You can also e-mail us with your questions at : parishnurses@goodshepherdkc.org.
